Kim Kardashian’s engagement ring has a sparkly new friend: When Kim and Kanye stepped out for the VMAs in August, people speculated that the massive sparkler on her ring finger wasn’t her engagement ring, but we weren’t quite sure. Here’s her original Lorraine Schwartz engagement ring, which features a 15-carat flawless, colorless diamond. There are more diamonds on the band and a ring of diamonds below it, for extra sparkle effect. (See that more closely here.)
Here’s Kim’s ring finger at the VMAs:
It’s so damn close to the original that we convinced ourselves it was the original: While most four-prong engagement rings have prongs in the corners, Kim’s engagement ring has prongs on the sides, at 12, 3, 6, and 9, if you imagine the hands on a clock. The VMAs ring did seem a little big bigger, but since it has the same unique prong placement, we decided the size difference was an optical illusion. But we were wrong.

Following the Emmys, E! confirmed that there is a new ring, this one weighing in at 20 carats. Here it is. (The new ring is on her left hand, while her engagement is on her right.)
The caption above incorrectly identifies the new ring as the most expensive engagement ring ever. We take issue with that for two reasons: 1) It’s not an engagement ring. 2) The Krupp Diamond, which Richard Burton picked to propose to Elizabeth Taylor, weighs in at 33.19 carats, and was recently sold by her estate for $8.8 million.
Of note: The new ring is officially Kim’s biggest diamond. Her engagement ring from Kris Humphries had a 16.21-carat center stone, so the new one clearly outweighs it. (The ring from Kris was 20.5 carats total, but it had around 4 carats in side stones.)
